Vilella brought his vision of the Bioeconomy to the 16th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA)
The Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Nation, Fernando Vilella, participated in the inauguration of the 16th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), an annual event organized by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) of the German government . The event has four thematic discussions in simultaneous working groups. Secretary Vilella will participate in group 2, under the title of "Promote resilient and sustainable value chains." This segment will be led by Edwini Kessie, Director of the Agriculture and Commodities Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO). During Thursday, Vilella held a meeting with the German Minister Özdemir, where they highlighted the importance of the bilateral link between both countries in the cultural, commercial, investment and cooperation opportunities in the bioeconomy and the technological platforms that support the development of these productive chains.
He also spoke with the Minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries of Uruguay, Fernando Mattos, delving into the status of the bilateral agenda, along with the opportunities for cooperation within the framework of the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS), highlighting the importance to work on a joint vision in relation to adaptation to climate change, promoting the sustainability of our production systems and defending a multilateral trading system based on scientific principles, in order to respond to global food security.
In this sense, Secretary Vilella and Minister Mattos agreed to evaluate within the framework of the CAS the development of joint lines of research to obtain emission factors specific to the region.
Today, during the meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of Paraguay, Carlos Giménez, they agreed on the importance of joint work at the regional level within the framework of the CAS.
Along these lines, they agreed to promote greater exchange between the agricultural research institutes of both countries (INTA and IPTA) and proposed an upcoming meeting between the health authorities (SENASA, SENAVE and SENACSA) to address the issues on the sanitary and phytosanitary agenda. Likewise, Argentina conveyed the importance of the candidacy of the Argentine, Luis Barcos, for the General Directorate of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), promoting the incorporation of a regional perspective after 100 years of French presidency.
Finally, they agreed on the importance of advancing cooperation through ABRE-Bio, the International Biosafety Network for products derived from Modern Biotechnology together with Brazil and Uruguay.
Secretary Villela also spoke with the Minister of Agrarian Development of Brazil, Paulo Texeira, about the need to work in coordination to promote this regional agenda.
Argentina proposed holding the next CAS meeting in our country at the beginning of March, within the framework of ExpoAgro.
In his meeting with the FAO, represented by Máximo Torero, chief economist, he agreed on the importance of advancing international consensus on bioeconomy, as part of the solution to the challenges of sustainability.
Both agreed on Argentina's potential to transform biomass in a sustainable way, meeting the demands of the most demanding consumers, with traceability and certification schemes.
That is why Vilella pointed out that "we are working to value our agro-bio-industry, which is one of the most efficient in the world due to its very low carbon footprint."
On the other hand, Torero and Vilella agreed to deepen the ties of cooperation between FAO and Argentina and highlighted the need to eliminate distorting measures of production and the environment.
The Argentine delegation met with Ambassador Josefa Sacko, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (ARBE) of the African Union, with whom they discussed the potential for trade and technical cooperation towards the future between Africa and the region , particularly with Argentina through the promotion of technologies and services associated with Argentine production systems.
In addition, he held a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Food, Agriculture and Light Industry of Mongolia, Gankhuleg Munguntsog, who expressed Minister Boorchuluun's interest in visiting Argentina in the coming months.
Along with Vilella, the Argentine delegation is made up of the Undersecretary of Agri-Food Markets and International Negotiations, Agustín Tejeda; the Agricultural Counselor of the Secretariat at the Argentine Embassy to the EU, Gastón Funes; the Argentine ambassador to Germany, Fernando Brun; and the Argentine candidate for the General Directorate of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), Luis Barcos.
